Editorial Wedding Photographers
When it comes to photographing your wedding day, finding the right photography style for you is really important. One style that has been gaining popularity is a style by editorial wedding photographers. But what exactly does that mean, and how does it differ from other styles? In this post, we’ll break down the essence of editorial wedding photography and compare it to other popular approaches, so you can determine if it’s the right fit for your big day.
What is Editorial Wedding Photography?
Editorial wedding photography is all about storytelling, elegance, and creating images that wouldn’t look out of place in a high-end fashion magazine. It combines luxurious and glamorous aesthetics with a focus on intricate details and authentic moments. Think stunning portraits, carefully styled details, and sweeping shots that capture the grandeur of the venue. Whilst shooting some wedding photography in Lake Como I found this kind of venue really lends itself to editorial wedding photography. You can see an image as an example above.
Unlike traditional wedding photography, which often emphasizes formal poses, editorial wedding photography strikes a balance between guided direction and natural candid wedding photography. It’s designed to evoke emotion and tell the story of the day in a way that feels elevated and timeless.
Key Features of Editorial Wedding Photography
Storytelling:
The hallmark of this style is its ability to narrate the day through imagery. Each shot adds to the unfolding story, capturing moments of joy, laughter, and love. You can see here in this image below from shooting a London wedding that it tells a story and gives you some narrative as to what might be going on. The bride and groom here you won’t know exactly what is going on. Though to them it captures their story perfectly.
Stylized Details:
From the bride’s dress to the table settings, every detail is photographed with a meticulous eye. Another example of this is below when working as an Italy wedding photographer for a couple that really connected with an editorial style.
Magazine-Worthy Quality:
Photos are polished, featuring impeccable lighting, flattering angles, and artistic composition. Of course, whether it’s worthy of getting into a magazine is subjective, though from this wedding I photographed in Ireland at the Powerscourt Estate just outside Dublin you can see the kind of style I mean.
Natural Yet Polished Posing:
While some direction is provided, the aim is to make couples look effortlessly stunning without appearing overly posed. I shoot a lot of weddings all over the world as a destination wedding photographer and you can see here from this image, the couple are not overly posed. They look natural but the image has a strong editorial vibe to it.
Authenticity Meets Glamour:
Editorial photographers excel at combining the genuine emotions of the day with a touch of high-end style. Whether I’m shooting more locally in Cheshire or far away from home my main focus on a wedding day is capturing emotions and reflecting on how the day feels whilst maintaining that glamourous aesthetic. There are plenty of wedding photo ideas that go through my head during a wedding but I always shoot from within and try and create the most unique images I can.
How Editorial Differs from Other Styles
Every couple that is planning a wedding will have their own style and vision of how they would like their wedding photos to look. Wedding photography isn’t one-size-fits-all. Here’s a quick comparison of editorial photography with other popular styles:
Fine Art:
Similar to editorial but with a softer, more romantic vibe. Think light and airy tones.
Traditional:
Classic poses and straightforward shots that stand the test of time.
Lifestyle:
A balance between candid and styled, capturing natural moments with a touch of direction.
Documentary/Photojournalistic:
Completely candid, focusing on storytelling without any intervention from the photographer. Below is a selection of a more documentary-style set of images that still align with a style that editorial wedding photographers will shoot.
